Troubleshooting Common Issues With Your AC Unit

While the services of a professional air conditioning repair contractor will be invaluable when dealing with more serious issues, it can often take a few hours or potentially longer for a professional contractor to be dispatched to your home. Thankfully, you may be able to troubleshoot some common issues on your own so that you can get your AC back up and running as quickly as possible.

Check Your Circuit Box

The first thing you will want to do is to ensure that your AC unit is receiving power. This is especially important if you have recently experienced a power outage or power surge. To check that your unit is receiving the power you will need to first locate your circuit box. Once you have located your main circuit box, check each circuit to ensure none of them have been tripped. If a circuit was tripped reset that circuit and then check to see if the unit is working properly. If no circuits have been tripped or if resetting the circuit does not help, proceed to the next step.

Check Your Filter

Your AC system needs to maintain an adequate air supply to work properly. A disruption in this air supply can easily lead to the need for AC repairs. To make sure a blockage is not to blame for your current AC problems begin by locating the air filter on your unit. If this filter is clogged with dust and debris you will need to either clean or replace it. After replacing the clogged filter check to see if your AC is working. If this does not improve the function of your air conditioner move on to the final troubleshooting step below.

Check Your Thermostat

If your thermostat is not working properly your AC unit will not get the signal it needs to know when to cycle on and off. Check to make sure the temperature on your thermostat is set to a temperature that is lower than the current temperature inside your home. You will also need to ensure that the thermostat is set to the cool setting and that the fan is set to the auto setting. Finally, if your thermostat makes use of a battery-powered digital display you will want to try replacing these batteries with brand new batteries.

Contact Your AC Contractor

If you have completed all of the steps above and your air conditioner is still not working properly, you will need to call a professional air conditioning repair company to come out and service your unit. If completing these steps has gotten your unit back up and running, you may still want to consider having your unit professionally serviced and inspected to avoid future problems. For instance, if you determined that your current problem was the result of a clogged air filter, simply replacing this filter may have been enough to get the system back up and running. However, you will still need professional repairs to remove any debris that has made its way further into the AC system.
